Project Rear Dana 60 Cut To 54"
Review
Praise: Top quality work on housing by Driveline Services in Reno NV, perfect fit.
Criticism: Moser Engineering refuses to stand behind their work. This not the first time. One axle flange was machined bad and the shaft was bent. I had to split the price of the Moser repair with Driveline services. In the future I will avoid Moser Engineering completely.
Ease of installation: Not easy and very time consuming, takes advanced fabricating skills to be successful.

What it was

1976 Dana 60 from a Ford Truck, 4.56:1 ratio, 8 lug, full floater, 63" wide with 16 spline axles, and best of all 59.00 from Pick and Pull.

PLANNED Modifications

This rear end will  be a semi floater with 5 on 5.5" lug pattern, 54" wide with Ford big bearing housing ends, Moser axles, and a 3/4" pinion off set toward the drivers side. Factory AMC 20 axle dimensions = 51" wheel mount to wheel mount. Pinion off set is 3/4" toward the drivers side.

What it is now

The housing has been shortened at Driveline Services here in Reno. The housing ends are large bearing Ford ends (new style, same as a 9").
The axles were made by Moser Engineering and are 35 spline.
The axle flanges were machined for 1/2 ton Ford brake drums.
The 11"x2" brakes came from a 1986 Bronco with a 9" rear .
The Ford drum brakes are perfect for the Dana 60. They are much larger than the stock AMC 20 drums and the Jeep emergency brake cable will work with the Ford brakes. I have plans for a future retrofit of disc brakes.
The lug studs are 1/2" and machined to center the brake drums.
The bearing setup has the seal going on the axle first, then the bearing, then a lock ring
The seal actually fits over about half of the bearing and the axle is held in the housing by a retainer plate.
I used a pinion yoke from a 75 F250 with a D60 rear. The yoke fit my stock CJ u-joint perfectly.

NEW!! Here are a complete set of scans of the Dana 60 Ring and pinion installation manual supplied by Precision Gear. They can be handy for the do it yourselfer.
