July 12-13-14 2002 Intro: This Rubicon trail trip was my best yet. The trip was deemed "The Rubicon Scramble 5" by a group of Scramblers lead by Rob "Berzerk" Miller. They made their way through the Rubicon trail in true Jeepers fashion with a few jeeps other than Scramblers tagging along (like me). You couldn't meet a better bunch than the Scrambler group, true good guys! For the second time my Loon Lake camp spot was visited by bears during the night. This time the food was hidden and the bears were unsuccessful. Instead of torn up food containers, all they left behind were muddy foot prints on the jeep. Day one: The trail begins. Day one began with everyone meeting on the slabs beneath the Loon Lake dam. "Berzerk" laid out the travel plan and off we went. We had few stops before Loon Lake, other than a TJ in another group broke a track arm. I welded the arm for the fellow Jeeper and as I finished, another Jeeper stopped and sold the guy a new track arm. I was on my way again. I didn't catch the rest of the group until Spider Lake, where we camped for the night. Spider Lake has got to be one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. Day two: More great wheeling. From Spider lake to Bucks Island Lake to The Big Sluice to Rubicon Springs, we made our way much without incident. One of our group lost a brake line and another guy lost an alternator and broke a steering knuckle. I had a meeting with a mud hole, which you can see in the pictures. We arrived at Rubicon Springs, set up camp on the rocks, and I hit the water for a much needed bath. Day three: Hate to leave. First thing in the morning I broke camp and headed out on my own. Most of the Scrambler group stayed behind for breakfast and were soon thereafter on their way. A few of the Scramblers left real early and were waiting for the rest of their group at the observation point on Cadillac hill. I traversed Cadillac Hill without incident, other than a gas can falling off, and was soon at the staging area near Lake Tahoe. Lastly, Again I must say, the Rubicon trail is the most rigorous trail I have ever been on. Even so, the conditions could not have been more perfect and the people more courteous and friendly. Thanks to Mark and Jodi for their generous hospitality and invite to run the trail with them and the other Scramblers.
